Face The Truth - Indians Are Not Industry Ready
The story goes back to a college in 2014, as an engineering student was struggling to clear interviews of various companies that visited their campus. Despite being an average student, he was assured to get into one of the companies. But he failed to do that and graduated without having a job and couldn’t think of further studies because of financial limitations. Was he at fault? Yes, but we would say not completely. Remember that I am talking a graduate from a tier-I engineering institute.
Today, we’d come across many such stories and hear often that Indian education system is still old and needs a makeover. Multiple unicorns, space exploration, foreign investments in India gives us a hope for a brighter future but holistically more than 80% graduates are not fit to work.
“Our engineers are not unemployable, they just don’t have industry-ready talent. In other words, they lack the skills required for the jobs that are available to them.” says Sangeeta Gupta, SVP, NASSCOM
The four years of engineering or any professional course is inoperative if a student doesn’t know how to apply their learning in the real world. Are we ignoring the fact that there is more to just imparting education but adding value to each individual.
On the other hand, industry needs people multiple skillsets. But where is skill-based education in India? Every semester students cram knowledge and get grades from a system which rewards best crammers. That results in a shining degree but in vain.
“ Being educated in today’s age is not about learning but about how much you are ready to fit in an industry. Our institutions need to build their credibility on asking the right questions that solve real world problems rather than a theoretical approach. At InMobi, we expect individuals who are obsessed with learning, are adaptive and highly knowledgeable about technology trends.” says Kevin Freitas, Global Head of Recruiting & Rewards at InMobi.
The sad truth is “You’re not industry ready”, and entire blame cannot be put on education but also yourself. Learning never stops, as much as you acquire knowledge – skill needs to be sharpened with the current trends in technology.
We’re soon launching something that will enable Indians to be industry ready. For more on this story: bridgethegap.doselect.com
